ADA Compliance for Websites & eCommerce

Web accessibility lawsuits have more than tripled since 2017. Is your site compliant?

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) became law in 1990, and the ADA Amendments Act (ADAAA) became law in 2008. These laws prohibit discrimination against individuals with disabilities in jobs, schools, transportation, and public and private places that are open to the general public.

In 2018, the Department of Justice clarified that websites are considered to be public accommodations, and therefore must comply with the ADA. Retail and eCommerce websites lead the pack in terms of ADA lawsuits, highlighting the importance of ensuring your site is compliant.

What does it mean for a website to be compliant?

For a website to be compliant, it must meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG). To be considered accessible, the WCAG states that web pages must be perceivable, understandable, operable, and robust, and lays out testable success criteria to determine whether pages meet accessibility standards.
